Acid Reflux in Children

 When we think of Acid Reflux we don’t usually think of children.Funny thing is most all kids have it when they are born. Babies  “spit up” all the time. That is a form of reflux.  Thankfully, when they are a little older that tends to go away, but not for every child.  

There are many different symptoms of GERD. Your child may only have a few of these symptoms. The most common symptoms include:

  •              pain, irritability, constant or sudden crying, “colic”
    • frequent spitting-up or vomiting
    • vomiting or spitting-up more than one hour after eating
    • not outgrowing the spitting-up stage
    • refusing food or accepting only a few bites besides being hungry
    • poor sleep habits, frequent waking
    • “wet burp” or “wet hiccup” sounds
    • bad breath

The less common symptoms of pediatric GER include:

    • constant eating and drinking (to soothe a sore throat)
    • intolerance of certain foods
    • poor weight gain; weight loss
    • swallowing problems, gagging, choking
    • hoarse voice
    • frequent red, sore throat
    • respiratory problems; pneumonia, bronchitis, wheezing, asthma, nighttime cough, apnea, aspiration, noisy or labored breathing
    • ear infections
    • constantly running nose; sinus infections
    • tooth enamel erosion
    • excessive salvation, drooling
    • peculiar neck arching, Sandifer’s Syndrome

If you think your child may have GER, please contact your child’s doctor. It is also very important to let your doctor know if your child develops new symptoms or if the symptoms change.

There are many medications on the market to ease symptoms of GERD, however most of these are made for adults. You should always discuss any medication with your physician before administering to a child. There are also several different Natural remedies that are suitable for children. Apple cider vinegar (usually diluted some),  or eating an apple ..is one choice. Some say  a glass of milk will help to soothe the esophagus. I personally tried Natural Aloe for my son who is 20 and had good success. His daughter also has reflux issues & is now taking Aloe Cure as well. She does not care for the taste of it..(she’s 5) but when mixed with grape juice she did not even notice that.  I would recommend that for anyone with reflux issues, however..I do still suggest speaking with your physician before trying any new medications or treatments.

More Natural Healing For Acid Reflux

Acid Reflux is also called esophagitis. The acid in the stomach may back up at the esophagus in severely and frequently is known as acid reflux. The symptoms are usually seen in heartburn and feeling of sensation to have acid reflux. People use a lot of prescribed medications for easing this problem. But herbal treatment is recommended without side effects.

Herbal Tea: This is one of the best known herbal remedies to ease acid flux ailment. It can decrease the affect of acid in the stomach. Peppermint, aniseed and lavender is used in tea to get relief. Mix three herbs to boil in two and a half cup of water and add a bit of honey to drink in the morning and at night to have relief.

Chicory Root Tea: This is very bitter herb for acid flux treatment, which contains endive and escarole. Make a tea of it by boiling one and half cup of this herb to drink as a tea, to mitigate and get relief from acid reflux and heartburn.

Grapefruit: The skin of organic grapefruit is better known herbal remedies for acid reflux. Even dry outer skin of grapefruit is taken to get cured from this disease. This dried skin can be chewed any time a person feels like having acid reflux inflammation or heartburn.

Pineapples: This herb is really very effective remedy for acid reflux. It is very rich in enzymes which can improve the digestion, mitigate inflammation and healing process may be speeded up. Fresh pineapples and its juice is rich in enzymes. Don’t drink bottled or canned fruit juices to avoid making condition worse.

Tips to Cure Acid Reflux Naturally

  • A glass of cold whole milk gets relief from acid reflux and heartburn.
  • A glass of water can be taken some time after the meal to ease the acid reflux and heartburn.
  • Almonds can be chewed in the morning or after the meals to have miracle treatment from this ailment.
  • Tea is prepared from chamomile or fennel can provide relief from this. The tea may be sipped and avoid to gulp it and of moderate temperature.
  • Eating an apple after meal can alleviate from this ailment.
  • Candied ginger can be used in tea to prevent this problem from recurring.
  • Two to three TSP of apple cider vinegar is effective in preventing this ailment.
  • Papaya enzymes are available in pills can reduce the chances of this problem.
  • Aloe juice is also very effective to prevent it.
  • It is better to chew sugarless gum after meals

Aloe Cure For Reflux

Most of the ads we see on TV are for some type of pharmaceutical..Pill. We have grown so accustomed to just reaching for a pill. Easy fix right? Not hardly. Read the fine print. Many of these “pills” have a long list of side effects, and many of those are worse than the original problem. Seriously, these can & do happen to you. On of the more serious side effects of  acid reflux medicine is that it has been shown to reduce calcium in the bones. What does that mean?  It means it can help contribute to Osteoporosis. And that means it can greatly influence your chance of breaking a bone. That’s huge, especially in older folks.

     I saw an ad recently for Aloe Cure. It’s 100% Natural and it can help eliminate Acid Reflux. The box says,” It soothes the Digestive System. It acts as a natural acid buffer. It aids in balancing stomach acidity  and promotes Healthy Digestion.  Sounds like a tall order, but I took the challenge along with my son to see if it could live up to those statements.

      First off I will have to say that this stuff does not taste good. I mixed it with grape juice on the 3rd day and found it to be much better. By the 4th day I’ll have to say I was feeling great. My reflux issue is probably in the mild category, or it was before the Aloe.  My son has a more serious problem & he has taken longer to notice extended relief.  He also chews tobacco & sometimes drinks alcohol, so he takes two steps forward and one step back. It’s hard to convince young men to do anything, but he does say that it has helped alot.

       Since I prefer to treat things Naturally first, I will have to say that the Aloe Cure has been a very benefical way to treat my acid reflux. I’ve given some to a couple of my friends and am waiting to see what they think. If you have problems with Acid Reflux you might want to do some research on this product & see for yourself.

What About Reflux?

  Out of 25 people I  asked about Reflux, everyone knew what it was,  and 17 people said they have it. Pretty impressive.  Reflux is really the medical term for a condition  when the contents of the stomach “back up” or reflux back into the esophagus. If this problem continues over a long period of time it can cause very serious health issues & possibly death.  Why?  The lining of the stomach is made to deal with acid as that is how food is broken down & digested by the body.  The lining of the esophagus is  much more sensitive and is made for transit, not for dealing with acids. Continued acid in the esophagus causes irritation, ulcers, possibly contributes  to asthma, etc.  It’s been reported that 1 in 10 people  develop extensive scarring in the esophagus which can often lead to esophageal cancer.

    It is said that one out of  every 10  people  have Acid Reflux disease.  Some of the  main causes  are   fatty  &  often fried foods,  acidic foods,  obesity,  the size & timing  of meals,  individual sensitivities to certain foods, alcohol & tobacco use.  Given the lifestyle that many of us have these days it is easy to see  why this disease is so prevelant. Fast food (and not always McDonalds) is a big contributor here.  Most of this food is fried with a high fat content,  & even worse it is often eaten on the run. Think for a moment about how that food is going to be digested. Not very well. It is this convenience that is killing Americans. Sit & watch people for about 15 minutes & notice how many are overweight, ..very overweight.  I work in the medical field & I’ve watched the weight problem literally explode in the last 10 yrs. What’s even worse is that it is also happening to our children.  Childhood obesity is growing at a staggering rate.  Our kids are suffering from Acid Reflux too.  If you have ever had a problem with reflux  then you know how painful it can be. Do you want your children to suffer through that?   SO  what do we do?

      Answers..Most ads on the TV are for  The Cure for Acid Reflux. Sure, all you have to do is take this one little pill twice a day.  At the end of the ad they list all the side effects of that one little pill. Sometimes they are worse than the original problem. It’s true that these medications do work for some people, but they are only a band aide. They  take care of some of the symptoms, temporarily…but they don’t heal the problem.  We have to take responsibility for our own health & the health of our families. It’s so easy to sit back & let everyone else do it for us..but we are now paying a serious price for that.  The number one thing we can do is  to eat better.  We can begin with smaller meals instead of Super Sized or even Triple Sized.  Foods that are baked  are much  better for us  & easier on our systems. Some of the fast food places are listening & actually providing some items that are healthier.  Take a chance on one of those. Many times they are very good. Even better, try cooking more meals at home. I know you work, so do I.  There are wonderful conveniences to help us…Crock pots for example. You can throw some things in there before you leave in the morning & when you arrive home most of your meal is ready. Viola!  Sit down on Sunday & plan out a few meals ahed. It takes alot of the stress out of  it.  So,  you are going to try healthier foods & smaller portions. Great!!  That will make a big difference.  My next post is going to give you some more ways to help with your Reflux problmes.
