What About Reflux?

  Out of 25 people I  asked about Reflux, everyone knew what it was,  and 17 people said they have it. Pretty impressive.  Reflux is really the medical term for a condition  when the contents of the stomach “back up” or reflux back into the esophagus. If this problem continues over a long period of time it can cause very serious health issues & possibly death.  Why?  The lining of the stomach is made to deal with acid as that is how food is broken down & digested by the body.  The lining of the esophagus is  much more sensitive and is made for transit, not for dealing with acids. Continued acid in the esophagus causes irritation, ulcers, possibly contributes  to asthma, etc.  It’s been reported that 1 in 10 people  develop extensive scarring in the esophagus which can often lead to esophageal cancer.

    It is said that one out of  every 10  people  have Acid Reflux disease.  Some of the  main causes  are   fatty  &  often fried foods,  acidic foods,  obesity,  the size & timing  of meals,  individual sensitivities to certain foods, alcohol & tobacco use.  Given the lifestyle that many of us have these days it is easy to see  why this disease is so prevelant. Fast food (and not always McDonalds) is a big contributor here.  Most of this food is fried with a high fat content,  & even worse it is often eaten on the run. Think for a moment about how that food is going to be digested. Not very well. It is this convenience that is killing Americans. Sit & watch people for about 15 minutes & notice how many are overweight, ..very overweight.  I work in the medical field & I’ve watched the weight problem literally explode in the last 10 yrs. What’s even worse is that it is also happening to our children.  Childhood obesity is growing at a staggering rate.  Our kids are suffering from Acid Reflux too.  If you have ever had a problem with reflux  then you know how painful it can be. Do you want your children to suffer through that?   SO  what do we do?

      Answers..Most ads on the TV are for  The Cure for Acid Reflux. Sure, all you have to do is take this one little pill twice a day.  At the end of the ad they list all the side effects of that one little pill. Sometimes they are worse than the original problem. It’s true that these medications do work for some people, but they are only a band aide. They  take care of some of the symptoms, temporarily…but they don’t heal the problem.  We have to take responsibility for our own health & the health of our families. It’s so easy to sit back & let everyone else do it for us..but we are now paying a serious price for that.  The number one thing we can do is  to eat better.  We can begin with smaller meals instead of Super Sized or even Triple Sized.  Foods that are baked  are much  better for us  & easier on our systems. Some of the fast food places are listening & actually providing some items that are healthier.  Take a chance on one of those. Many times they are very good. Even better, try cooking more meals at home. I know you work, so do I.  There are wonderful conveniences to help us…Crock pots for example. You can throw some things in there before you leave in the morning & when you arrive home most of your meal is ready. Viola!  Sit down on Sunday & plan out a few meals ahed. It takes alot of the stress out of  it.  So,  you are going to try healthier foods & smaller portions. Great!!  That will make a big difference.  My next post is going to give you some more ways to help with your Reflux problmes.
